ISO (Independent System Operator)

Within its jurisdiction, an ISO in is charge of the operations of the grid. They control and monitor the flow of electricity, as well as plan infrastructure improvements. They also track the grid’s energy market – the exchanges (sales and purchases) of power taking place between different utilities. ISOs and RTOs were developed in the wake of electric deregulation during the 1990s, in order to ensure non-discriminatory access to the grid for all power generators. Also see RTO.
