Fossil Fuels

These carbon-based fuels – such as coal, oil, and natural gas -formed in the earth’s surface back during the time of the dinosaurs. As the life forms (biomass) of that era died and new rocks and sediments accumulated over it, the plant layer compressed under the pressure. Immense geological forces condensed all the energy that the plants had originally taken from the sun, and the result was fossil fuels. They represent a vast pool of carbon that was removed from the earth's current carbon cycle long ago. When we add this carbon back to the cycle, it warms the earth and contributes to changes in the climate.
