I’m just one person. Does how I live really make a difference?
Browse by category
Answer for your emotions – yes. Usually this question comes from people who feel hopeless, so we just want to support you. Yes, in this big crazy world, you do actually matter and make a difference.
Now enough mushy stuff. Facts: If you are an American, then how one person lives REALLY makes a difference. The average American produces 22 tons of
carbon dioxide
per year. This is the highest per capita emission on the globe – the world average is 6 tons per capita.
Americans and other citizens in the developed world have a hugely disproportionate impact on
climate change
. If you reduce your
greenhouse gas
emissions – primarily those from electricity generation and transportation, both of which rely heavily on burning
fossil fuels
– then you can make a very big difference. 86% of the U.S. annual energy use comes from fossil fuel combustion. The U.S. is responsible for about 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet we only represent 5% of the earth’s population.
